Humboldt Kolleg Excellence in science and global challenges today, Sofia, 24-27 June 2026

The Humboldt Union in Bulgaria held a Humboldt Kolleg on the topic “Excellence in science and global challenges today”. The Kolleg has two main goals – attracting talented young people to apply for the Foundation’s programs and, on the other hand, highlighting the role of science in solving global challenges and achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The event was organized with the financial support of the Foundation and took place from 24 to 27 June 2026 in the “Prof. Marin Drinov” Hall of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The opening of the Kolleg was attended by the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Sofia, H.E. Ms. Irene Planck.

Established and young researchers from Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Poland, Romania and Croatia presented their current research in various fields of natural sciences and humanities, shared their latest scientific developments and findings. The topics of the Kolleg cover several panels, divided according to the UN goals: Good health and well-being; Quality education; Affordable and clean energy; Climate action.

At the event, representatives of the German Research Foundation (DFG) presented the programs of this foundation, in which Bulgarian scientists can participate.

Prof. Maria Endreva, scientist-ambassador of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, gave an information lecture, in which she presented in detail the Foundation’s programs and the opportunities for funding projects for young scientists and postdoctoral researchers and their scientific stay in Germany.
